A Conference and an Exhibition to Celebrate Giovanni Verga in Milan

As part of the celebrations for the centenary of the death of Italian writer Giovanni Verga, the State Archives of Milan presents a conference and an exhibition of selected documents from its repositories. Among the most interesting pieces there are the two court rulings that recognized for the first time the great Sicilian writer’s copyright on the adaptation of “Cavalleria Rusticana”.

The event focuses on the dialogue between the writer and Milan, between his vision of the world and the cultural circles of Italy’s most dynamic city. The writer’s pessimism, which has deep roots in rural Sicily, finds confirmation in his timely observation of people from the urban underclass: in Milan Verga’s most significant writings were born.

In Milan, the Sicilian writer invented a new way of recounting the real life of the poor people who lived from hardship and misery in newly united Italy, victims and not protagonists of the great History, far from the well-being enjoyed by the privileged social classes.
