Il cielo stellato

The Careof gallery in Milan is currently hosting the exhibition “Il cielo stellato” by Caterina Erica Shanta, a German artist and director who specializes in video and documentary film. The exhibition, curated by Marta Cereda, features a cinematic and artistic project focused on the Madonna della Bruna festival in Matera. Shanta examines the festival as a case study of how images are produced by others in certain contexts and how they bear witness to significant historical, social, and technological changes.

At the heart of the exhibition is a medium-length film produced by Careof and Invisibile Film, which explores the phenomenon of the festival and the thousands of images it generates. Shanta collected photographs from the public during the festival, including those taken on smartphones and cameras, to create a 360° photogrammetry of the destroyed central subject, the Carro Trionfale.

Through this project, Shanta examines the relationship between human beings and the virtual dematerialization mediated by images. She shows how photography has become an integral part of contemporary human behavior and how it transforms the role of the observer into an author of new narratives. The exhibition is also accompanied by archival materials collected by the artist during her work in Basilicata and a cycle of images created using photogrammetry technology. The exhibition provides a fascinating insight into the intersection of art, documentary filmmaking, and technology.
