Jan Fabre “La saggezza del Belgio”

Curated by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio, the exhibition, titled “La saggezza del Belgio”, presents thirty small-format drawings from the series “Folklore Sexuel Belge” and “Mer du Nord Sexuelle Belge” and about ten sculptures, exhibited for the first time in Italy, through which, Jan Fabre questions Belgian identity, sexuality and sensuality, passed through the visual sifting of surrealism, a characteristic that distinguishes his work, as well as the entire Belgian art.

Jan Fabre, who in this case ironically calls himself “Le Bon Artiste Belge,” proposes a body of works aimed at seeking the Belgian national identity, which is not unique but dense with differences, starting with the presence of three communities: Flemish, Walloon and the German-speaking one. These areas in turn are internally even more fragmented, a diversity in which he seeks to find wisdom and unity to propose what can “connect rather than divide.”
