Jewels by Giulio Manfredi celebrate Raphael
The Pinacoteca Ambrosiana is hosting a selection of jewels by master Goldsmith Giulio Manfredi. The works are on display in the magnificent room that houses the celebrated Cartoon by Raphael for the School of Athens fresco in the Vatican.
The series of 21 pieces in the exhibition – curated by Alberto Rocca and Arnaldo Colasanti – are all inspired by the characters, and also concepts, of the impressive School of Athens: Pythagoras becomes a gold and emerald necklace with interlacing that evokes his famous theorem; Alcibiades is represented by a squared ring that makes a strong statement and is adorned with fluid drops of green tourmaline as a tribute to the commander’s handsome mien; Heraclitus is transformed into a pendant in turquoise chrysoprase whose dynamic circular and ogival forms are inspired by his geometric proofs; Socrates is a seemingly simple, essential neck chain, but each fillet is set with tiny diamonds in the shape of a star.
