Artist Chiara Passa Explores Design With Virtual Reality

An app for smartphones and tablets designed by artist Chiara Passa creates magical worlds inside Fornasetti’s universe.

During Milan Design Week 2022, Fornasetti presents “Still Life,” an app for smartphones and tablets designed by artist Chiara Passa. At the heart of the work is the loop between past and present, the exchange between real and virtual, and the archival focus on common objects understood as vehicles of a historical value capable of crossing eras and styles. Taking her cue from the magical world of Fornasetti, Chiara reflects on the construction of furnishings and their very concept: objects coated with the patina of years, lived in but timeless, endowed with an ever-growing value. Crucial values for the Milanese Atelier and part of founder Piero Fornasetti’s heritage, which find a stimulating and coherent dialogue in Still Life.

Entering the Fornasetti store during the Design Week week, visitors can explore the space dedicated to vintage pieces, a treasure chest that collects a special wunderkammer immersed in an atmosphere made of beauty and memories, using a special lens: through tablets and smartphones it will be possible to look beyond the surface, inside the physical object.

Chiara Passa has been analyzing the liminal spaces between physical and virtual for several years now, using immersive technologies on a wide scale. Her vision is embodied in animations, net-art, interactive and site-specific video installations, and video sculptures using and incorporating different 3D viewers.

“Still Life” is a varied art installation consisting of a part usable through virtual reality and several ceramic sculptures animated through augmented reality technology. The result is a decomposed and interactive three-dimensional painting where objects are unexpectedly animated.
