On Wednesday morning Tommaso Sacchi, the Councillor for Culture of the City of Milan announced the appointment of Gianfranco Maraniello as the director of the city’s museums of modern and contemporary art. Maraniello will take on the helm of the Museo del Novecento and the GAM (Gallery of Modern Art), effective immediately.
After a long and buzzy selection process, Sacchi confirmed that Maraniello will direct the museums that house Milan’s prestigious art collections. The Museo del Novecento is also set to undergo an extensive renovation in the coming months, which will include the annexation of the building next door.
“The selection process proved to be complex,” said Mr. Sacchi. “I would like to thank the committee that carried out a job that was worthy of our city.”
Maraniello, 50, is a former editor of Flash Art Magazine, and curator at the Macro Museum in Rome and the Shanghai Biennale. He directed the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna, from 2005 to 2015, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Trento and Rovereto, from 2015 to 2020.
