On December 7, the main event of the Prima Diffusa, a project of the City of Milan in collaboration with Edison and the public Italian broadcaster RAI, returns with 10,000 seats in 35 screening venues. Milanese citizens have the opportunity to watch for free the first opera of the season live from the most famous theater in the world.
This year is the turn of “Boris Godunov” by Modest Petrovič Musorgsky. The direction of Kasper Holten, former Director of Covent Garden, casts a bird’s eye view of the history of Russia, combining emotional participation with a reflection on the value of memory and testimony.
The event will be broadcast live in theatres, cinemas, museums, hospitals, and prisons. Everyone will be able to watch the performance that will start at 6 pm CET.
Live or pre-recorded lectures will precede the broadcast, allowing those unfamiliar with the infamous opera to be introduced to Boris Godunov world.
“Prima Diffusa returns to accompany the city to one of the most important events on the city’s cultural, national and international calendar,” said Tommaso Sacchi, Councillor for Culture of the City of Milan, in a note to the press. “A great excitement that this year is renewed for the 11th year. As always, it is the alliance between institutions and partners that makes it possible. The City Council, Teatro alla Scala, Edison and RAI make up a well-established team, united in the common goal of making La Scala’s Prima an event shared as much as possible by the Milanese, both thanks to the involvement in many widespread initiatives that allow everyone to enter into the spirit of the opera; and thanks to the live broadcasts that create an extraordinary and exciting sharing between the community and the audience at Teatro alla Scala on the evening of December 7. Prima Diffusa, however, would also not be possible without the collaboration of the city halls and many city institutions and entities-from theaters to prisons, from libraries to museums, from airports to welcome centers-that provide spaces and organization to participate in this great celebration of music, which is part of Milan’s identity,” Mr. Sacchi continued.
